Sept 3
Neutral temps for the city and valley this morning. Moderate outflows for Howe Sound with clear skies on all the cams. 8 degree gradient forecasted.
Expect 20 knots for the Spit. 7:31 AM PDT 3.82 feet Low Tide
Strong West winds overnight and possibly tomorrow! 3 days away from access at Jericho…

Sept 2
Bluebird skies on the cams this morning. Cold valley temps overnight have caused strong outflows this morning. Temps will take a bit to get neutral and should make for a late start at the Squamish Spit. 7 degree gradient forecasted with a high of 24 for Squamish. Expect 20 knots with warmer water temps. 7:07 PM PDT 11.66 feet Low Tide

Sept 1
After a South East comes a North West! Jet stream remains low in the North Pacific causing on and off weather as it tracks directly over Southern B.C. and Washington. Signs of clearing on all the valley cams this morning. Light West winds cool the city and with a 3 degree gradient for Squamish should make inflows. Expect 15 – 20 knots at the Spit today.
Warm weather returns to Squamish tomorrow!
5:40 PM PDT 11.27 feet Low Tide

Aug 31
Heavy rain with thick clouds on all the web cams this morning. Rain ending near noon. Cold gusty winds for Squamish. Expect 10- 25 knots

Aug 30
Strong outflows combined with weak gradient will delay the inflows this morning. Moderate winds through the day with strong winds late into the evening as this system approaches tomorrow. This will make for strong South East winds for the city.
3rd ave tomorrow? 3:44 PM PDT 9.59 feet Low Tide

Aug 29

Aug 28
Jet stream slowly steers back on course. Moderate outflows this morning for Howe Sound. Light gradient forecasted from Vancouver to Lillooet but with bluebird skies expect temps in the valley to exceed the forecasts.
Strong west winds in the Georgia Straight should remain moderate South of YVR and will have a adverse effect on the morning inflow for Howe Sound, causing a late start for the Spit. Expect 15 knots for the Spit.
2:27 PM PDT 7.58 feet Low Tide

Aug 27
Fog on the Squamish web cam.
High humidity in the valley will cause increasing clouds as the valley heats. This will keep the valley at cooler temps than seasonal norms but there should still be enough of a gradient to cause inflow. Expect light gusty winds for the Spit. Very light winds for Vancouver with moderate westerlies tomorrow. Long term for the Spit looks unsettled, clearing tomorrow with patchy skies. Big High pressure system developing on the outer Pacific means good weather is coming!
1:52 PM PDT 6.61 feet Low Tide

Aug 26
Strong West winds in the Georgia as predicted on Tues. Should remain strong South of the Vancouver airport. Ferry Term? Sun and clouds on the valley cams with some clearing early this afternoon.
Aug 24
A 1007 mb low remains in the Alaskan panhandle. Causing threats of fowl weather in the next few days.
Aug 23
Low pressure develops in the Alaskan pan handle dropping the Jet stream, breaking the omega block whilst spinning off small systems of unsettled weather for the next few days. Sun until Thurs?
Today; A low thin ceiling of cumulus clouds on the valley cams, should burn off as temps rise. 5 degree gradient with light outflows and light South push from the city should get things moving early for the Spit.
Aug 16
Despite extreme valley temperatures, inflows remain consistent with slightly lighter winds over the last few days. 32 degree high for Squamish today. Expect a hot, steady, 15-20 knots.
5:05 PM PDT 10.77 feet Low Tide

Aug 15
Lighter outflows today combined with a 36 degree high in Lillooet should draw an 8 degree gradient for the Spit. Although temps through Whistler and Pemberton are forecasted neutral and are slightly less than the Squamish temps. This could cause a problem, so wait for the switch to inflow before driving up! Expect a very hot 15-20 knots. 4:07 PM PDT 9.36 feet Low Tide

Aug 14
Happy B-Day Mell!
6 degrees cooler in the Whistler Pemberton area this morning causing strong outflows for Howe sound, readings of 34 mph at Portue. Haze on the valley cams should clear as dryer air moves in. 7 degree gradient forecasted for the Squamish Spit. Light west winds in the Georgia Straight increase slightly cooling the city. Massive High pressure system sets in the Pacific, generating high temps for B.C all week. This will create west winds in the Georgia Straight over the next few days. West winds should pick up this afternoon for the city. Extremely clear on all the valley cams this morning. This should allow for accelerated heating in the Pemberton/Lillooet area. Strong outflows for Howe Sound could mean a late start for the Spit. Expect very warm winds today around 15 knots.
2:32 PM PDT 5.91 feet Low Tide

Aug 12
A thin layer of Low cloud on the valley cams. This should burn off before noon. Valley already 3 degrees warmer. Light inflow early this morning means a good start. 9 degree gradient forecasted. Lighter west winds in the Georgia Straight today, will make for steadier winds. Expect 20+ knots today. 1:49 PM PDT 4.25 feet Low Tide

Aug 11
Leftover altocumulus clouds on all the cams as high pressure is established in the Pacific. Gradient of 9 degrees with south push from the city will make for moderate winds today at the Squamish Spit. Very light West winds will cool the city over the next few days keeping a strong gradient for Howe Sound. Hot temps in Squamish and the valley will provide warm winds over the next few weeks as the Omega block is once again established. Low tides, making it excellent for beginners today. Expect a warm and steady 20-25 knots.

Q: Are lessons done in a group or is it 1 on 1?

A: All lessons are 1 instructor to 1 student ratio. Unless the student has booked the “learn with a friend” package. Then it would be 1 instructor to 2 students who know each other. VKS doesn’t train students who don’t know each other together.
Group lessons are conducted as a class then split into smaller sub groups.

Q: What will I need to bring for my lesson?

A: For your lesson you will need to bring a pair of thick sweatpants and a thick long sleeve sweatshirt. This is to wear under your dry-suit. Fleece works well also. Thin Lycra is not sufficient. If you have a wetsuit 4/3 or thicker this will work. If your lesson is 2hrs and under a thinner wetsuit will do.

Q: What does VKS provide me with?

A: You will be provided w/ instructor, Personal water craft, insurance, dry-suit, booties, gloves, life vest, helmet, waist harness, kites, kiteboards, bar & lines and pump. complimentary water or pop will also be available. VKS uses top of the line gear!

Q: What happens if I have a lesson booked and there is no wind that day or if the wind stops during my lesson?

A: VKS always asks the student for a check in call the morning of your lesson, if the forecast doesn’t look promising the lesson is called off and rescheduled for a later date. If the wind dies during the lesson, it’s timed off and continued from where the lesson ended at a later date.

Q: What time do lessons start?

A: Lessons generally start at 10 am and 2 pm. Typically our beginner lessons or longer lessons start in the morning and our advanced lessons start in the afternoon. Although you can request your own start time!

Q: Is there any part of the lesson done in the classroom or is there a set curriculum to follow?

A: Absolutely not. The whole lesson is conducted on the Spit and in the water. We tailor the lesson to the students needs and abilities. Every student is unique and VKS understands that students will learn with different methods and at a different pace!

Q: How far is it from Vancouver to Squamish?

A: The drive takes about 1hr from the Lions gate bridge. “Depending on traffic” VKS recommends giving yourself 1.5 hrs from central Vancouver!

Q: Where and when does VKS operate?

A: VKS Conducts lessons any day that there’s wind! We are open 7 days a week from 10:00 am till the wind stops. All lessons are done at the Squamish Spit from May till Oct.

Q: Are there any other fees?

A: The SWS requires a $15 day fee or an annual membership for any user of the Spit. Even though you are with the kite School this is a separate fee and is processed separately. Please bring the appropriate payment for the SWS to your lesson.

Q: I wanna book now!

A: The fastest way to book a lesson is:
1. First contact www.Airtimeboardsports.com by phone or in person. 604 734 9463 and pay a $100 deposit.
2. Email Info@vksvancouver.com include your name, what lesson you would like to book, a phone #, what date and time you would like to come and that you have done the deposit! VKS will contact you to confirm the date and time. It’s as easy as that!

1) Safety Kitesurfing can be a dangerous sport. Taking lessons will familiarize you with the safety aspects of the sport and how your equipment works. Knowing this means a safer experience for yourself and those around you.

2) Jumpstart your learning experience
Why take months to learn Kiteboarding when you can be up and riding in as quick as a few hours? The quickest way to get on the water is to invest in Kiteboarding lessons. Kiteboarding instructors use proven teaching methods that will get you on the water in no time.

3) Save Money
A Kiteboarding rig can cost anywhere from $2000 and upwards. That’s a lot of money to spend if you’re not sure this sport is for you. Kiteboarding lessons could cost in the region of $300, which is cheap in comparison to spending $2000.

4) Trash someone else’s gear
The first few hours on a kite will give your kite a decent beating as you will be dropping it constantly. If you take lessons you get to use the school’s equipment, which means you don’t have to worry about the wear on your gear.

5) Meet other Kiteboarders
There’s nothing more intimidating than starting a new sport without knowing anyone. Kiteboarding schools are a great place to meet other beginners just like you. Meet other Kiter’s and experienced riders then practice with them once you’re done with your lessons.

6) Cheaper gear
Most Kitesurfing schools have great info and tips on where to get your gear. So you don’t have to buy twice.

7) Knowledge
Did you think you can start Kiteboarding by reading your kite manual or browsing the net? No book or site can replace one on one instruction. Kiteboarding lessons will teach you valuable knowledge such as how to rig your lines, how to self launch your kite, how to relaunch your kite, how to kite safely, how to go upwind, etc.

8 ) Learn in safe conditions
If you start by yourself you will have no idea what kind of conditions are safe to learn in. How would you know if the wind is too strong? Your Kiteboarding instructor will take you to a beginner-safe beach that will make your learning experience safe and pleasant.

9) Try out different gear
Most Kiteboarding shops have a huge range of Kiteboarding gear that is ready to try. Taking a Kiteboarding lesson will give you the opportunity to try a wide range of gear before you buy.

10) Peace of mind
Taking Kiteboarding lessons means a Kiteboarding instructor will be right by you for assistance. If you have an equipment malfunction or have lost your board they will be there to help.
